About Johnny Shines

Johnny Shines is remembered not just for his incredible talent but also for overcoming significant life challenges. Although Johnny’s mother taught him to play the guitar at a young age, his passion for music did not fully ignite until meeting legend Robert Johnson at age 20. For years, Johnny played in local venues, but he eventually recorded for J.O.B. He left his music behind in 1966 to focus on construction but soon began hitting more local bars. He recorded more music and even toured on the international blues circuit, including a stint with Robert Lockwood Jr.

After losing one of his 11 children, who lived in Tuscaloosa, he moved to the city to take care of his remaining kids. However, with so many mouths to feed, he spent a lot of time touring. Although Caroline did not see a lot of her father growing up, she tells people that he was an excellent father and gifted musician. By attending this blues festival, you get to admire and appreciate his gift right along with his family.
